Booth 8.01
At the 2018 NADA Miami art fair, Western Exhibitions will present three artists — Jessica Campbell, Lilli Carré, Michael Pellew — whose practices are influenced by contemporary comics, animation and the graphic novels. Paintings, drawings and ceramics on view will utilize pop culture tropes, tragicomedy and the cartoon figure to focus on the self and one’s relationship to both physical and virtual worlds.
Jessica Campbell, author of the graphic novels XTC69 and Hot or Not: 20th-Century Male Artists, will open a solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in December 2018. In addition to Campbell’s painfully humorous rug paintings that take aim at everyday experiences that reveal the sexism women face in the 21st century, our installation will be held together by a new carpet piece that covers much of the footprint of the booth.
Lilli Carré, an acclaimed graphic novelist, has had solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. Her animated films have been shown in festivals throughout the US and abroad, including the Sundance Film Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Our booth will concentrate on her ceramic work, inspired by narrative and erotic ancient pottery, especially the explicit vessels made by the Moche civilization around 100-700 CE.
Michael Pellew is a Brooklyn-based artist who is known for his humorous ruminations on pop culture and celebrity mash-ups. His inspiration comes from speed metal, Taylor Swift, vintage MTV, Chicago Deep House and reality TV stars. He makes art at LAND Studio & Gallery, a nonprofit program that works with adult artists with developmental disabilities and his recent show of drawings at Western Exhibitions was reviewed on the website Disparate Minds.
