Western
Exhibitions will be presenting a JOHN
RIEPENHOFF project called "Art Stands"
for the 2012 NADA NYC Art Fair. "Art Stands" are a series
of papier-mâché sculptures of Riepenhoff’s
legs, each set of legs wearing a different pair of the artist’s
pants, underwear and shoes while holding another artist’s
artwork. While Riepenhoff’s sculptures literally support
paintings, they also metaphorically represent his support for
other artists, simulating the perspective of the art-handler and
making visible the unseen laborer integral to exhibition-making.
By ascribing equal value to handler and artist, the artwork attempts
to render the social boundaries within the art community permeable.
John Riepenhoff is a painter, he co-runs The Green Gallery in
Milwaukee and has worked as a curator, art handler and art fair
director (Milwaukee International, The Dark Fair). His practice
reflects the different roles he inhabits within his art community.
He often presents other artworks in the context of his own projects,
as in "The John Riepenhoff Experience", a miniature
room attached to the ceiling, viewable only by climbing a stepladder
and sticking one’s head through a hole, where he (and others)
curate miniature art shows. His recent show at Western Exhibitions
presented artists from The Green Gallery on his Art Stands.
Our NADA NYC booth will continue Riepenhoff's illustration of
a cultural community by presenting artists that have shown both
at Western Exhibitions and The Green Gallery. His “Art Stands”
will support work by Nicholas FRANK, Jose LERMA, Rachel
NIFFENEGGER, Scott REEDER, Tyson REEDER, Geoffrey Todd SMITH,
Deb SOKOLOW and Ben STONE. Three "Art
Stands" will populate the booth with the artworks rotating
during the run of the fair.
RIEPENHOFF's recent show of "Art Stands" at Western
Exhibitions supported paintings by artists who show at The Green
Gallery, a space Riepenhoff co-directs in Milwaukee was reviewed
